Our program this Friday will be Shawnee Mission Northwest Interact Club. They will be speaking to us about their trip to Ecuador this past June.
They traveled to Manta, Ecuador, to continue the improving access to clean water project in local communities through a partnership with Manta Rotary Club and Woodland Charity. This water project has been an ongoing effort since the devastating 2016 earthquake, bringing together dedicated volunteers and community leaders to support sustainable recovery and long-term development.
The Lenexa Rotary Foundation has approved the use of reserve funding, supplemented by member donations, to add a tree in honor of Steve Nettles to the Lenexa Rotary Grove at Clear Creek Park at 8700 Clare Road.
In 2017, the Lenexa Rotary planted 50 trees at Clear Creek Park. Additional funds allowed us to plant trees recognizing the following former members and past presidents:
PDG Charlie Smith – Charter President 1967-68 PDG Gene Amos – President 1980–81 Tom Sherard – Charter Member Wes Fry – President 1983–84 Alan Uhl – President 1971–72 David Huff Dennis Moore
If you would like to contribute toward Steve Nettles' tree, please submit your donation to Phil Hammond. Checks should be made payable to Lenexa Rotary Foundation. Any funds raised beyond the required amount will be donated to the District 5710 Anti-Human Trafficking Committee.
Our Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, is starting a Book Drive to benefit the Learn to Read program, whose representatives spoke at our Club several weeks ago.
The drive will run through October. Fred will have a collection bucket at our upcoming meetings for new or gently used books. Information sheets with a preferred book list will be available on the tables at this week's meeting. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution to purchase books, donations will also be accepted that way. Thank you for your support.
Fred stated that he would like to have a pile of books 20 feet high!
THANK YOU to Phil Hammond and everyone who worked the drink tent at the Chili Challenge!
Great Day and Night. Attendance was down Friday night about 30%. Saturday attendance was up. Jerry's Bait Shop was more competitive and The Other Side of The Tracks team was selling a lot of beer for a donation. LRC and JCRC were off $550 in sales, we both made $1,345 down about $75 from last year. That is an earnings of about $45 per hour worked.
