Our speaker this Friday will be Chriz Dally, the Executive Director the Museum of Deaf History, Arts & Culture in Olathe.

When a highway sign was set up on I-35 showing the location of the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD), streams of people stopped by KSD asking for information about others associated with the school in addition to information about Deaf history, arts, and culture. This inspired a group of Deaf and Hearing Kansans, along with the City of Olathe's strong support, to come up with the idea of establishing a center across the street from KSD to meet this need.

Grand opening, when doors first opened to the public, took place on September 29, 2001 (with museum exhibitions following in 2005).

Founded as Kansas Educational Foundation on March 25, 1988, renamed later as Deaf Cultural Center Foundation (2009), and is now the Museum of Deaf History, Arts & Culture, Inc. (MDHAC) as of 2017.

Book Drive

Our Sergeant-At-Arms, Fred Spears, is starting a Book Drive to benefit the Learn to Read program, whose representatives spoke at our Club several weeks ago.

The drive will run from August 28th through October. Fred will have a collection bucket at our upcoming meetings for new or gently used books.  Information sheets with a preferred book list will be available on the tables at this week's meeting. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution to purchase books, donations will also be accepted that way.  Thank you for your support.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

October will mark the start of the Lenexa Fire Department's Fire Safety Trailer visits at Lenexa-area elementary schools in honor of Fire Safety Month.

We assist the firefighters as they take 3rd graders (fire safety) and 5th graders (severe weather) through the trailer in 30-minute slots. The firefighters do all the talking and crowd control; Rotarians simply support them from a little control room by answering faux 911 calls, operating the smoke machine, etc, and resetting "fire hazards" between classes. There isn't much for us to do for the severe weather presentations.

To help me more efficiently organize trailer volunteers, Amy Ruo has created an Online Sign-Up with the preliminary schedule of volunteer slots (it includes the school, date, and a roughly 9-11:30am shift and 11:30am-2pm shift), available at:

As we get closer to October and schools finalize the actual class schedules, Ashley Sherard will provide more detailed schedules for each school visit.

Fine Cards for Sale

As you know, at each weekly meeting, Sergeant-At-Arms Fred Spears collects $1.00 from each person which is a "weekly fine".  The money is then donated to the Lenexa Rotary Foundation.  BUT in place of having to make sure you have $1.00 at each meeting, you can purchase a Fine Card.  The Fine Card costs $65 for the Rotary year (July-June) and Fred can also give you a tax receipt.  Fred will be selling them at our weekly meeting.  If you write a check, make it payable to Lenexa Rotary Foundation.
