This Friday's meeting will be Kara Armstrong, the Program Director with Arts Education with Johnson County Community College Midwest Trust Center. In January of 2021, the JCCC Carlson Center for Performing Arts was renamed to the Midwest Trust Center.
The Midwest Trust Center provides arts education, school and family events, community engagement, professional development and Arts Education Artists-in-Residence.
Summer is coming (maybe it's here already!) I know you that each of you has at least one fantastic outdoor cooking (or eating) recipe that you're proud of.
Our program for May 14 is a chance to share your favorite summer recipe and a chance to get lots of new ideas. Please e-mail Tedd Maxfield at teddmaxfield@gmail.comwith your recipe. Bonus points if you include a photo.
You'll have a chance to talk about your recipe at the meeting, and I'll send a pdf with all the recipes I receive.
Shawnee Rotary - The Sleep in Heavenly Peace building bunk beds for children in our community was very successful! Thanks to the help of Steve Nettles, Matt Janes and Jim Blaufuss for working side by side with Shawnee Rotarians, friends and family on Saturday, May 1st. Approximately 20 bunk beds were prepped and ready to go to homes of children who have not had a bed to sleep in.
The sun was shining, drills were pressing, sanders sanding, saws throwing saw dust everywhere and stain beautifying the final pieces. It takes a village and thank you for your help!
YOUR Lenexa Rotary Foundation Board accomplished many things this year. Notable activities were updates to the Board structure, Bylaws, Morgan Stanley Investment rebalance and updates to our annual Investment Policy Guidelines. These documents are available for your review on our club's website in the member-only area.
But, of course, it is the giving that matters most. This year we exceeded our typical annual giving by approximately $31,000 (represents only new giving and not pass-thru funds). Even though the pandemic kept us from fundraising we strongly felt committed to our community by exercising the charitable strength of the Foundation's past stewardship. Not only did we increase our giving in this desperate time of need, the diversity of the giving was striking.

GG2122514 - Reintegrating Survivors of Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking APPROVED!
The project will expand the services that are currently being provided to victims of human trafficking by establishing a training and reintegration center in Grandview, Missouri, to provide job skills training to survivors committed to restoration and reintegration after exiting a sexual exploitation or human trafficking situation. We will use our vocation and experience to volunteer to train, mentor and coach survivors.
By connecting survivors with vocational training opportunities, life skills training, and access to mentors and resources, we decrease the likelihood that they will be re-exploited in the future. Survivors will have the opportunity to develop life and parenting skills, complete a high school diploma and online vocational certification, and learn financial budgeting and retail/customer service skills. The training center will include a boutique that will sell slightly used high-end clothing that is donated by Rotarians and current Rended Heart supporters. In the boutique, survivors will have on-the-job training in retail sales, marketing, financial management, inventory, customer service, and business management.
The last two Little Little Lending Libraries were installed. The students were genuinely excited about the libraries and the staff was very appreciative. Here are some photos.
We are collect egg cartons to be given to a local food pantry. They only need the 12 egg cartons, not 18.
If you have some to donate, please contact Steve Nettles. You can drop them off at his house or you can drop them of at Rimann Liquors at 87th & Lackman.
RYLA will happen this summer over the course of three different weeks. Two camps will be day camps where parents (or students) will need to drive to and from daily. One camp will be virtual.
Both day camps can accept 30 students and will cost $250 while the virtual camp can accept 36 students and will cost $50.
The deadlines for the camps all vary due to the dates of the camps. That's why there are three different applications!
There will be three camp options. Deadline is two weeks prior to the date of each camp:
May 31 deadline for 6/21-6/25-face to face, day camp Lawrence, KS
June 7 deadline for 6/28-7/2-VIRTUAL camp
June 16 deadline for 7/12-7/16-face to face, day camp, Overland Park, KS (KU Edwards campus)
If you have any students who are good candidates, please contact Lenexa Rotarian Sarah Donohoe
Please visit the RYLA page of the website for applications and brochure!
To date, we know the majority of Clubs in District 5710 have indicated they will work to meet their goal of $50 per member: As a Bonus, District 5710 has committed $4,000 to help fund this effort.
Rotary is working with the County to develop a permanent signage/recognition element for the Tree Grove to memorialize this Rotary gift to the people of Johnson county - hopefully listing the participating clubs.
The current February membership count of the Johnson County Clubs is 587 Rotarians. At $50 per member, the District could easily reach a total of $29,350. There will be a prize for the club with the most significant percentage over their goal. The Lenexa Rotary Foundation has pledged $1000 but is requesting a $50 donations from all members. All contributions from club members are voluntary. It is our hope that we will reach the $50 goal.
