Scott will speak with us about the Youth Auto Cross Races. An unforgettable day of excitement, empowerment, and fun at the 4th Annual Youth Autocross, created especially for young people with disabilities. Participants will navigate a custom racecourse in specially decorated golf carts while trained instructors provide a safe, supportive, and exciting ride for everyone. Each confirmed participant will receive their own racing jumpsuit, a prize bag, and a commemorative medal to celebrate their achievement. Beyond the track, food vendors and additional activities will be available for participants and families to enjoy.
October will mark the start of the Lenexa Fire Department's Fire Safety Trailer visits at Lenexa-area elementary schools in honor of Fire Safety Month.
We assist the firefighters as they take 3rd graders (fire safety) and 5th graders (severe weather) through the trailer in 30-minute slots. The firefighters do all the talking and crowd control; Rotarians simply support them from a little control room by answering faux 911 calls, operating the smoke machine, etc, and resetting "fire hazards" between classes. There isn't much for us to do for the severe weather presentations.
To help me more efficiently organize trailer volunteers, Amy Ruo has created an Online Sign-Up with the preliminary schedule of volunteer slots (it includes the school, date, and a roughly 9-11:30am shift and 11:30am-2pm shift), available at:
As we get closer to October and schools finalize the actual class schedules, Ashley Sherard will provide more detailed schedules for each school visit.
As you know, at each weekly meeting, Sergeant-At-Arms Fred Spears collects $1.00 from each person which is a "weekly fine". The money is then donated to the Lenexa Rotary Foundation. BUT in place of having to make sure you have $1.00 at each meeting, you can purchase a Fine Card. The Fine Card costs $65 for the Rotary year (July-June) and Fred can also give you a tax receipt. Fred will be selling them at our weekly meeting. If you write a check, make it payable to Lenexa Rotary Foundation.
This Newsletter Editor will be taking a 2-week road trip to Michigan, Quebec, New England and everywhere in between. During my absence Ben Harber will be doing the weekly newsletter and Pat Thomas and Moe Cougher will be filling in at the meeting. See you all on August 28th!
