Our speaker this Friday will be Phil Hammond. He will be speaking to us about The Rotary Foundation.
Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.
Together, we can make an impact in your community and around the world.
What impact can one donation have?
$3 is the average cost to fully protect a child against polio.
$50 can maintain water filters to help fight waterborne illness.
$200 to develop work opportunities by replacing livestock for people impacted by disasters.
Phil Hammond will also be speaking about the Lenexa Rotary Foundation, our club's 501(c)(3) organization. During his presentation, Phil will discuss several of the many grants and donations the Foundation has awarded.

This scathing new comedy about small-town politics and real-world power, from the author of August: Osage County, exposes the ugliness behind some of our most closely-held American narratives.
Beneath the deadpan back-and-forth of a seemingly typical city council board meeting lies the whiff of something distinctly sinister in Tracy Letts's new play The Minutes. Known for his keen ability to illustrate the faults and cracks under humanity's surface, Letts delivers an acutely thrilling new work that pulls you in with laughter before grabbing you by the throat.
I can’t claim I had a profession, rather a series of unrelated jobs. Immediately after college, starting in 1967 I served 3-years in the Army, followed by a couple of years in retail management, then about 2-years on the Wichita Police Department. In 1973 Marion Laboratories hired me as a Sales Representative. I spent 20-years at Marion retiring as Vice President, Market Development. A couple of years after Dow Chemical purchased Marion in 1989, the new company “reengineered” and my job went away. Even though I received an offer of another position in the company, I took a voluntary retirement, thinking I would relax for a while. Three days later I received a job offer from a pharmaceutical consulting firm. I worked with the firm for 10-years and retired again.
What is your favorite sports team and why?
Since grade school days, I’ve been a big basketball fan. While some may think it odd, I support two Kansas teams, Wichita State basketball and the University of Kansas football and basketball. My least favorite sports team in anything is Kansas State…sorry Fred.
What is your favorite vacation destination, and why?
It depends upon whether the goal is to relax or explore. In a few weeks my wife and I head to Hawaii for a week, a favorite relaxation location, excluding the flight back to KC, which is grueling. For history, architecture, food, wine and overall ambiance Paris and France are at the top.
What is your ideal sandwich?
That is a tough question. Let me be redundant and take you back to my Army days in the late 1960s. While in Vietnam I dreamed of having a bologna sandwich and cold fried chicken…weird right? On R&R at a hotel in Hong Kong I satiated part of the desire with a chopped ham sandwich with butter, it was so, so good. I had to wait on the cold fried chicken until I returned home to Kansas.
If you are at a trivia night, what category would you know most about?
I haven’t played in many years. A fairly good player when the game was introduced, history was my strongest category. The last time I played several years ago, it was either my age or more difficult questions, I was terrible.
