Our speaker this Friday will be Lindsey Douglas, Deputy Secretary of Transportation for the State of Kansas.  She will be speaking to us about the Highway 69 proposal.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), along with the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) and the City of Overland Park, are conducting an in-depth study of how best to improve public safety, reduce congestion and increase travel time predictability along U.S. 69.

U.S. 69 from 179th Street north to 103rd Street is one of the state’s busiest highways, with heavy congestion peaking during rush hours and at other times.

Previous studies indicate that U.S. 69 congestion will increase significantly in the future, creating slower traffic and longer response times for emergency personnel. Transportation improvements are needed to address congestion and keep the economy moving. These improvements will be identified as part of the U.S. 69 Expansion Project.

Craig's Crossing-UPDATE
Craig Crossing trail has been mulched!  It was completed on Friday so that is exciting news.  The parks staff also did some work to trim up around the trail so the access is more visible.

Lenexa Rotary Foundation

As mentioned in last Friday's meeting, your Lenexa Rotary Foundation has partnered with the PTA of Rosehill, Rising Star and Lenexa Hills elementary schools, as well as Western Johnson County Rotary Club (WJCRC), to provide a Little Free Library at each school.  Thank you to the club board for wanting to be involved in advancing education through reading in our community.  And thanks to the Foundation board for their willingness to fund the entire project should we not come up with a funding partner.  As it turned out, our two Lenexa Rotary clubs will split the cost 50/50.  A nameplate will be added to each library indicating the PTA and our two Rotary club names.  No installation date has been determined.  However, an effort will be made to coincide with existing school reading events, delivery and installation dates.  Stay tuned for updates as they become available.

A personal thank you to Cassandra Cyril.  She was a guest several times at our club meetings because her family just moved to Lenexa from Colorado where her husband is a Rotarian.  Having heard during our meetings what we are involved in, and as a Rosehill parent,  she reached out to me this past summer to see if we had an interest in helping Rosehill PTA with this project.  This is how Rotary makes a difference in our communities!  Opportunity is everywhere.  So if you have an idea, explore it. If someone asks us for help, tell them you will explore it.  Then talk to one of the Foundation board members.  Your Lenexa Rotary Foundation is here for our community.

Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group

A note from Lenet.

As your Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) liaison, I am excited to share something we can all be proud of as Kansas City metro residents.  Kansas City, Missouri, is headquarters to at least two important organizations that reach millions of people in need with clean water and electricity.  They are Water.org Water.org and, most recently, Battery Tour Battery Tour.  Pick up KC Studio magazine Jan/Feb 2021 issue and read about AY Young and Battery Tour on page 30.  Of note to Rotarians, that article mentions the UN and Project Drawdown.  Rotary has been closely involved with the UN 17 sustainable goals https://sdgs.un.org/goals and Project Drawdown https://drawdown.org/ on environmental issues.  Check it out!

ShrimpFest
Due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, there is no safe option to hold the Rotary Club of Lenexa ShrimpFest in early 2021.  As a Committee and as a Club, we have discussed various options and alternatives, and here is your chance to weigh in and be counted.

As a reminder, there is no danger to the Lenexa Rotary Foundation.  Through careful management, the Foundation remains fiscally sound, and we are not in danger of being unable to carry out the Club's good work, even without our largest annual fundraiser.

Thank you for working with us and looking forward to better days.
